ENGLISH AS A NEW LANGUAGE

  • ENGLISH AS A NEW LANGUAGE

    Grades 9-12

    0-1 Unit

    Prerequisite:  None

English as a New Language (ENL) is for students who have limited English proficiency because of foreign birth or ancestry.  Students new to the USA or New York State are admitted based upon scores of the LAB-R English proficiency test.  Continued eligibility for ENL services is based upon results of the New York State English as a New Language Achievement Test.  This course develops students’ abilities to use English proficiently, following the conventions of both spoken and written forms.  Depending upon their proficiency level, students will either take multiple ENL courses or ENL and another English course simultaneously.

A student successful in ENL coursework will increase his/her ability to listen, speak, read, and write in English for:

    1. Information and understanding.
    2. Literary response, enjoyment, and expression.
    3. Critical analysis and evaluation.
    4. Classroom and social interaction.
    5. Awareness of cross-cultural knowledge and understanding.
