Coaches Biography

  • Coach Paul Biddle

I have been coaching tennis at Amherst Middle School and High School since I started teaching in 2003. I coached boys and girls modified/JV tennis for 9 years before I moved to the Varsity level. I have worked with players who have never held a racquet before to advanced 5.0 players. Outside of tennis I have also been the modified co-ed swim coach for twelve years. I love coaching and seeing the students in a non-academic light. It keeps me in shape (mostly), keeps me playing and more importantly, gives me a chance to pass on the knowledge and love of tennis with my players.

As a player, I have played since I was 12 years old. I started on my High School Varsity tennis team for one year as a senior in 1998. That year I played first doubles and posted an 11-0 record with my partner. I attempted to play in college, but my music education studies proved too time-consuming to keep up on a regular basis. I did play tennis and racquetball for fun throughout college.

In the summer of 2012 I joined Miller Tennis center and started to play on a more regular basis. I played and won 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0 men’s singles tournaments and also played doubles and mixed doubles quite a bit. I take tennis drill classes, a few lessons, cardio classes, several leagues and hit for fun with friends. This extra playing and learning has helped me a lot in the last few years with coaching. I have been able to bring different drills, teaching techniques and upgraded my own playing to be able to help the talented Varsity players we have at Amherst High School. Recently, I also joined the USTA league to keep myself motivated and playing during the summer on various 18 and over teams. I have played tournaments all over New York, including New York City, and have met some amazing friends along the way. I am lucky to be the Amherst Varsity Tennis coach and look forward to another great season. Our team has been lucky enough to win the division several times, have players make it to the ECIC and Sectional tournaments each year and even qualify for States on four different occasions.

I have been the ECIC Chairman for Girls Varsity Tennis for six years now. Previously, our girl's tennis team was awarded the 2019-2023 ECIC Sportsmanship Awards and I was  honored as the 2019 ECIC Coach of the Year for Girls Tennis. Being a player, coach and Chairman gives me many opportunities to be involved with the game I love with students I am proud to work with. In 2020, I was awarded the National Federation of High School's Coach of the Year for Girls Varsity Tennis for New York. Shortly afterward, I was awarded the Northeast Coach of the Year. While I fell short of being named the National coach, I am very honored to be a part of such a wonderful program in such a wonderful community.

Our student athletes have qualified for sectionals every year since I took over as Varsity Head Coach. In that time, I will have had 9 different players/doubles teams qualify for the State Tournament including Anna Wheat/Ada radomski coming in 7th place in the STATE!!. We run a year-long program that includes a summer program through the community education program. Please see the website for the Village Glen or Miller Tennis Center for the HS drill class abd/or lessons.
