    Amherst High School Concert Chorale

The “Concert Chorale” is the culminating ensemble of the Amherst High School vocal music department.  Rehearsing 2nd period each day, “Chorale” is an elective, auditioned choir open to 10th – 12th graders.  Expectations for performance are high, and singers are expected to develop their music literacy, vocal technique, musicianship, and listening skills.

The group sings a wide variety of music literature from the classical idiom to that of jazz, pop, and world music.  The Concert Chorale has trice toured to New York City, having performed both in New York and on Long Island.  In 2009, the Chorale commissioned a new work by NYC based composer, Chris Mueller as part of its NYC tour.  Other highlights include a full performance of Mozart’s Requiem with professional soloists and the Amherst High School Symphony Orchestra.

Students attend weekly rotating vocal lessons to reinforce sight-reading skills, vocal technique and style, and solo and small ensemble singing, but much of the focus is on solo literature where students have the ability to prepare auditions for regional honors choirs, including the ECMEA All-County Festival held at UB, the NYSSMA Zone I Area All-State Festival held at SUNY Fredonia, and the NYSSMA All-State Festival held in Rochester.

    Sweet Sixteen and Varsity Singers

Started by Mr. Walter Reitz, these two auditioned choirs have been a part of the Amherst High School vocal music department since 1950.  Comprised of the best singers at Amherst High School, the groups rehearse on Tuesday evenings from 7 - 9 pm. “Sweets” and “VS” are traditionally student led ensembles of female and male voices respectively, singing a wide variety of music literature from the classical idiom to that of jazz and pop music, to arrangements written by the students themselves.

Over the last few years, the “Sweets” and “VS” have joined forces to sing several outreach concerts including most notably pre-concert music for the Buffalo Philharmonic Chorus’ annual “Messiah” performance at the OLV Basilica in Lackawanna, NY, fundraising benefits for Shakespeare in Delaware Park at the Buffalo Seminary, and a US Post Office First Day Issue Ceremony at the Albright -Knox Art Gallery.

The groups have also performed large scale choral/orchestral works at King Concert Hall, SUNY Fredonia with Western New York Chamber Orchestra and the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church Concert Choir.  In 2011, the Sweets and VS also served as the lead choir for the ACSD/Buffalo Philharmonic Link-Up partnership at Kleinhan's Music Hall.
