U.S. News and World Report released its 2026 best middle and elementary school rankings and Amherst Middle School and Smallwood Drive Elementary School were selected because they placed among the top 40% in the state.

In total, 46,998 elementary schools and 23,328 middle schools were ranked. The state assessment data used in the ranking indicators was sourced from the U.S. Department of Education’s EdFacts initiative. For this edition, the ranking indicators used mathematics assessment results from the 2022-2023 academic year and reading assessment results from the 2021-2022 academic year. This one-year-older reading assessment data was used due to EdFacts not having 2022-2023 data available as of September 2025 when U.S. News obtained the state assessment data used in this analysis.
Both schools earned best middle and elementary school ranking distinction in 2025.
