Two AMS Students Win Auto Show Poster Contest

Middle school poster contest winners hold drawings Two eighth-graders at Amherst Middle School took a first and third place award in the 2018 Buffalo Auto Show poster contest sponsored by the Niagara Frontier Automobile Dealers Association.

Matthew Willett was awarded first place in the middle school division for his colored pencil work that featured a collage of high-end vehicles such as a McLaren, Lamborghini, Audi and Bugatti. His work highlighted a red and blue buffalo, as well as event sponsors. He said he thought it would be a fun thing to do after his art teacher Christina Klein told him about the contest. He said he tried to make his background colors match the cars and that he went through some brainstorm sessions to determine his final design.

Jamie Mattheus was awarded third place in the middle school division for her work that had a celestial focus. She said she was inspired by space and that she likes the look of stars and space. As she developed her design, she wanted her car to look like a rocket. She used acrylic paints for the background and gouache, an opaque watercolor, for the car.

"I thought this was a good opportunity to get art out there," said Jamie. "I was doing it for fun and didn't expect to win."
