Sixth-Grader Wins Auto Show Poster Contest

Gavin holds his poster A sixth-grader at Amherst Middle School earned a first place award in the 2019 Buffalo Auto Show poster contest sponsored by the Niagara Frontier Automobile Dealers Association.

Gavin Schmitt’s entry for the Cars and Stars contest theme features four high-end sports cars, colored to match four planets. His drawing features a Lamborghini, Bugatti Type 57, 1971 Chevrolet Corvette and a 2007 Ford Mustang GT.

“I just really like sports cars, so I drew sports cars and then I realized after I colored them that they had the same color as each planet that I know. So I drew the planet that the car looked like,” he said. The planets include Mercury, Earth, Jupiter and Saturn. He also added foam stars.

“I’ve always been pretty good at art and it’s my time to get out what I want to draw that I’m thinking of in my mind,” he said.

Asked which car he might like to own one day, Gavin replied that he’d like a Bugatti.

Twelve Amherst Middle School students entered the 2019 design contest and their posters were on display at the Buffalo Convention Center during the auto show. Gavin was at the auto show and saw his first place award in the middle school division.

This is the second year in a row that Amherst Middle has earned awards in the auto show poster contest. Last year, Matthew Willett and Jamie Mattheus, both eighth-graders, took first place and third place.
