Janet Battaglia Inducted to U.S. Lacrosse Hall of Fame, WNY Chapter
Janet Battaglia, Amherst girls varsity lacrosse coach, was one of 12 inducted into the Western New York chapter of the U.S. Lacrosse Class of 2018 Hall of Fame. Joining other notable high school and college coaches, players, officials and sports reporters, Mrs. Battaglia was recognized in a ceremony Jan. 13 at the Marriott Buffalo Harborcenter and at the Buffalo Bandits lacrosse game.
A physical education teacher with Amherst Central School District since 1990, Mrs. Battaglia retired from teaching in June 2017. She will continue this spring as an assistant coach with the girls lacrosse program.
Under her leadership, the girls lacrosse teams earned 10 Section VI championships and had a 188-41 record during the 1999 to 2010 and 2016 seasons. She was named the Section VI Girls Lacrosse Coach of the Year in 2001 and 2007 and Amherst Bee Co-Coach of the year in 2016. She served as the Girls Section VI Lacrosse chair and was the U.S. Lacrosse high school rep for the WNY chapter.
She has worked with girls teams for 18 years with the Hotshots Camp program and brought U.S. Lacrosse U19 teams and college teams to play on Amherst Central High School's turf. She has also assisted coaching the girls varsity basketball team for two years. At the modified level, she has coached volleyball, basketball, lacrosse, softball and track.
As part of the only mother-daughter team inducted into the Amherst Athletics Hall of Fame, she shared the June 2017 induction ceremony with her daughter, Jodi, who was honored for her lacrosse playing skills.
