Amherst Will Hold Youth Wrestling Program for Grades 1-6

Amherst’s Community Education department will offer its Youth Wrestling Program this winter to introduce young students to the sport of wrestling. The program will be offered to students in first through fifth grade.

Beginning November 6, the program will meet once a week at Amherst High School from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. Students will attend twice a week after winter recess to continue developing their new skills until the program’s conclusion on February 7.

Each wrestler will be matched with others of the same age and weight to participate in drills, games and competition for the duration of the program. Staff will also weave lifelong skills into the program such as sportsmanship, perseverance and mental toughness.

The youth program will be coordinated by Dennis Bauer, varsity head coach for Amherst Wrestling. Brian Simonson, a former Virginia state champion with 15 years of coaching experience, will also coach in the program.

Registration for the program is $75 and can be done on the district’s Community Education webpage. All registrants will receive an Amherst Wrestling t-shirt. For questions or concerns, feel free to contact Darcy Daigler at (716) 362-3080 or ddaigler@amherstschools.org.
