Girls Flag Football Debuts at Amherst
Amherst Central High School is piloting a girls varsity flag football team this spring in a collaboration between Section VI, New York State Public High School Athletic Association, Buffalo Bills, Nike, New York Jets, and the New York Giants. There are 12 local teams in the pilot year with hope of a regional and state championship. There will be six to eight games with a roster of 15-20 girls. Amherst received a $3,000 grant from the Buffalo Bills, $1,000 from the Amherst Tigers Booster Club and $1,200 from the Amherst Alumni Association to offset expenses in the pilot year. Nike will provide up to 20 uniforms.
A kick off was held in late April with hundreds of girls from 20 different Section VI and Section V schools who took the field at the ADPRO Sports Training Complex to kickoff the first ever girls high school flag football season with training drills and intersectional scrimmages. Pictures below are from the kick off.
