Amherst to Offer Basketball Training for Grades K-5
This October, Amherst’s Community Education department will offer the Amherst Future Tigers Basketball School to introduce young students to the game of basketball and develop their skills. The program will be available to students in kindergarten through fifth grade.
Students in the program will meet at Windermere Boulevard Elementary on every Tuesday of the month for a total of five, one-hour training sessions. Kindergarten through second graders will participate from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m., with grades three through five playing between 7:00 and 8:00 p.m.
To develop each student’s basketball and character skills, an emphasis will be placed on shooting, passing, rebounding and defense, as well as focusing on character traits like teamwork, self-discipline and respect. Each week will have the theme of a different character word as students participate in different stations for each emphasized skill as well as playing actual games.
Working with the students will be: Chris Kensy, Amherst’s varsity coach; Jake Mullen, varsity assistant coach; Dorian Billups, varsity assistant coach; Reuben Owens, junior varsity assistant coach; Ryan Mohr, Maryvale junior varsity coach; Amherst Central High School varsity boys and girls basketball players.
Registration for the program is $85 and can be done on the district’s Community Education webpage. All registrants will receive a reversible jersey and an Amherst Tigers basketball, but will need to bring sneakers and a water bottle to each session.
