Director of Health, Physical Education and Athletics is Appointed
The Amherst Central School District has named Jeffrey M. Wheaton as our new director of health, physical education and athletics, effective July 1. Mr. Wheaton replaces Dr. Kiel Illg who has accepted an assistant superintendent position with Lackawanna City School District.
Since 2017, Jeff has been the Director of Health, Physical Education, Athletics and Recruitment at Young Women’s College Prep in Rochester, NY. In this role he was responsible for hiring, supervision and evaluation of 50 teachers, coaches and club advisors. Highlights of his role include increasing athletic offerings of teams and extracurricular clubs over the course of one year, organizing a committee of teachers, coaches, players and parents to develop an athletic and co-curricular code of conduct handbook, and proactively involving parents and the community in athletic special events. Additionally, he supervised the Emergency Response Team, the Communications Team and the new student enrollment process. Added to his duties at Young Women’s College Prep for a brief time was the role of Acting Principal.
He has been the Director of Physical Education/Health and Physical Education teacher at Red Jacket Central Schools in Shortsville, N.Y. as well as Assistant Athletic Director/Health and Physical Education teacher at Park View High School, in Sterling, Va. He also worked as a Health and Physical Education teacher at Greenville Elementary School in Nokesville, Va.
His coaching experience spans unified basketball, varsity co-ed track and cross country, girls varsity basketball, modified baseball and JV football. He is currently the Section V Girls Soccer Coordinator and an Executive Committee Member.
For five years, he owned Kidz All –Star Camp in Warrenton, Va.
He holds an educational leadership certificate from Marshall University; a master’s degree in health studies/promotion from the University of Alabama; a bachelor’s degree in physical education from SUNY College at Brockport and an associate degree from Monroe Community College.
He holds professional certifications in School Building Leader, New York State Physical Education, New York State Health Education, NIAAA Certified Athletic Administrator, and as an ECSI First Aid, CPR & AED Instructor.
