Summer Academic Program Offers Hands-On Learning
Hands-on learning in science, math, ELA, social studies and more has brought 428 students on campus this summer through a district-sponsored academic summer school.
At the elementary level, it was important to keep students at their home schools of Smallwood Drive and Windermere Boulevard. Families could enroll in a six-week option or in one of two three-week sessions. Classes are offered Monday to Thursday with a breakfast and lunch available. Federal stimulus funds covered the cost of extended daycare at Windermere with Just for Kids. Transportation is also provided to and from school and from Smallwood to Windermere for the daycare. Activities are aligned with the theme of Tiger Olympics.
At the middle school, 102 students are enrolled. Fifth-graders were invited to the middle school session as a way to be introduced to the building they will attend as sixth-graders in the fall. Middle school courses are ELA, math, science, social studies, Spanish/French classes.
At the high school, the required courses that students need to graduate are being offered at each grade level in math, English, social studies, science, health and CTE. Buses run three times a day. There are 118 students enrolled. During last school year, the high school developed many avenues to get kids back on track, such as offering Wednesday in person attendance.
The district will also be offering afterschool academic programs during the school year.
