Officer Mark Bechtel is Our New School Resource Officer
Amherst Police Officer Mark Bechtel has been assigned to the district as the new School Resource Officer. Officer Bechtel has been a police officer with the Town of Amherst for 11 years and has worked for several other agencies since 2001. He was the School Liaison Officer for Sweet Home Middle School and Smallwood Elementary School. He is a Field Training Officer, a member of the Crisis Intervention Team and a member of the Pistol Team. He also serves in the Honor Guard.
He will carry on the role that Officer Trey Johnson began in January of 2019 as the first SRO assigned under a shared service agreement between the Town of Amherst, the Amherst Police Department and the Amherst CSD Board of Education to place a school resource officer in the district. Officer Johnson was promoted to a new position within the Amherst Police Department as the Lead SRO/Safety Education Officer.
Students at the high school sent Officer Johnson off in style with a banner of well wishes. During his time with the district, he has served as a valuable resource to building administrators, teachers and students.
The SRO position is based at the high school, but is a visible presence at all of the buildings and at school-sponsored events.
The safety of our staff and students is a priority. The shared service agreement with the town and the police department has been very successful. We look forward to working with SRO Bechtel as he continues to strengthen the relationships with district stakeholders that Officer Johnson began.
